Yesterday we learnt about several British sporting traditions and now I want to share some video in order to make you better understand the essence of these sports traditions. On Shrove Tuesday every year the ladies of Olney, Buckinghamshire compete in the world famous Pancake Race, an Olney tradition which dates back to 1445. Easter Games The egg was a symbol of the rebirth of the earth in Pagan celebrations of spring and was adopted by early Christians as a symbol of the rebirth of man at Easter. The game may be both indoors and outdoors. It doesn't matter if you have a small home or the weather isn't good to hide the eggs outside. All you really need is creativity and a half hour or an half to play the game. An egg-and- spoon race is a sporting event in which participants must balance an egg or similarly shaped item upon a spoon and race with it to the finishing line. At many primary schools an egg- and- spoon race is ...

Americans celebrate Thanksgiving on the forth Thursday of November. Children don’t go to school and businesses close for four days. It is a special day for families, and people travel great distances just to be with their families for this occasion. This tradition started with the “Pilgrim Fathers”. They were the founders of a colony in North America. These people were Puritans, they were against the Church of England and they suffered religious persecution in England, so they wanted to start a new life. So, on the 6 th September 1620, 102 men, women and children left Plymouth in a ship called Mayflower. The voyage wasn’t easy, but finally the arrived in America on the 11 th December 1620. They landed on the north-west coast and they called this place Plymouth. But it was winter, and there wasn’t much food. They immediately began to build small houses, but it was too late to grow crops. The winter was long and half of them died. In the spring, native...
